Meet Tahmina!

Today I got another opportunity to sit down with a really cool woman in business. Tahmina Watson is a brilliant author, entrepreneur, and immigration lawyer. She’s been listed by Business Insider as one of the top US immigration attorneys. She is also the founder and host of the Tahmina Talks Immigration Podcast, in case you would like to hear more of what she has to say!

Starting Out

Tahmina started her career practicing law in England before meeting her husband and immigrating to the United States. Because she had immigrated to the US and had to study for the New York Bar Exam, she had limited options were she could practice law at first. Without many options, Tahmina reluctantly started to practice immigration law. To her surprise, it turned out to be exactly what she was meant to do. She fell in love with being an immigration attorney. What she did not love was the law firm she worked at, and the partner she worked with. In 2009, with encouragement and support from her husband, Tahmina opted to open her own firm. She hasn’t looked back since.

Expenses Of A Law Firm

Starting your own law firm comes with a lot of overhead. You, at the very least, need to be able to pay to rent an office and fill it with equipment. Tahmina started her law firm with only one paralegal. Originally, her plan had been to only worry about paying her paralegal. Over time, despite her anxieties, she realized she was going to need to hire a second law firm. Fast forward to today, and she is one of the top law firms in the nations for tech start-ups, particularly from immigrants.

Connecting With Clients

Tahmina credits her success to her ability to establish a connection with her clients. She understands both what’s really cool about being an entrepreneur, and what’s really scary. Her clients, she reports, are usually very smart people. They just need guidance to know what forms to find and actions to take to put themselves in the best position legally, and financially.
